CAF Reinstates Equatorial Guinea as Harambee Starlets of Kenya disqualified

Updates  on (AWCON)
AFRICA WOMEN'S CUP OF NATIONS

The National team of Equatorial Guinea has been reintegrated to the Total  Women's Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2018 after the team was initially disqualified for allegedly fielding an ineligible player.

Kenya had approached the Continent's Appeal Board to disqualify Equatorial Guinea alleging that Annette Jacky Messomo was not eligible to feature for Equatorial Guinea in a game against Kenya which sealed the qualification of Equatorial Guinea after the victory against Harambee  Starlets.

CAF, through the decision of its Appeal Board on September 8, had hastily ruled in favour of Kenya and disqualified Equatorial Guinea  when the East African country  protested against the eligibility of Annette who featured for former African Champions  in the fixture but on the 7th of November, the CAF Appeal Board upturned it earlier vague decisions and reinstates Equatorial Guinea and give them Green light to participate in the African Women's football tournament

The official statement by CAF Appeal Board reads:

“On November 7, 2018, the Appeal Board of Confédération Africaine de Football held a meeting in order to decide on the appeal of the Federación Ecuatoguineana de Fútbol of the decision of the Disciplinary Council of September 8, 2018.

“Regarding the eligibility protest against player Annette
Jacky Messomo durong the match no. 30 Equatorial
Guinea vs Kenya played in the frame of the Total African Women’s Cup of Nations 2018, the Appeal Board decided as follows:

1. The appeal lodged by the Federación Ecuatoguineana
de Fútbol is admissible;

2. The decision no 001-CAI-08.09.2018 is overruled;

3. The player Annette Jacky Messomo is eligible to play
for the National Team of Equatorial Guinea;

4. The National Team of Equatorial Guinea is
reintegrated in the Total African Women's Cup of
Nations 2018.”

However, Kenya's Football Federation was already contemplating the withdrawal of the Harambee Starlets from the competition due to paucity of funds to sponsor their Female National team to the tournament before the hammer of CAF's decision fall on them. The Harambe Starlets were in action on Wednesday 7th of November 2018 against Black Queen of Ghana in a build up friendly match for the 2018 AWCON in🏟️ MISC Kasarani, Nairobi.

Equatorial Guinea, the two time former African Women's Champions will now files out against the Falcons of Nigeria, Bayana Bayana of South Africa and Zambia in Group B
